Practice Words in Sentences

Instead of seeing only maison → house, you review a sentence:

Hier soir, nous avons marché jusqu’à la maison avec notre voisin.

Yesterday evening, we walked to the house with our neighbor.

The sentence gives marché, maison and voisin a context. Each word has its own review history, so a word you know and a word you struggle with can follow different schedules.

How Vocaber Works

1. Read a French sentence and try to understand it.
2. Check the translation.
3. Tap the words you did not know.
4. Return for review as those words become due.

Output practice reverses the direction: you try to produce a French sentence from an English prompt. The goal is to practice both recognition and recall.

Why Use Spaced Repetition?

Spaced repetition schedules another encounter with material after a delay. Vocaber applies that idea to individual words while presenting them in sentences. Reviewing one unfamiliar word should not require treating every word around it as equally difficult.

What the Research Shows

The paper Automated Sentence Generation for a Spaced Repetition Software found that sentence-based review helped learners build vocabulary roughly four times more efficiently than single-word review in a 10-day study with 26 learners of Danish.

Vocaber puts this principle into practice: review several words in context, with an independent spaced repetition schedule for each word.

A French App After Duolingo

Choose your next step by the difficulty you actually encounter. If you understand sentence structure but keep stopping for words, focused vocabulary practice may help. If grammar is the obstacle, use a course, teacher or French grammar reference. If you recognize written words but miss them in speech, practice French vowel contrasts.

Vocaber is designed to supplement those activities. It does not replace conversation, extended reading, or listening.
